Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a high-molecular dispersion type liquid crystal display device having high light scattering ability in the case the device is turned off and capable of displaying a high-contrast picture.

CONSTITUTION: In this high-molecular dispersion type liquid crystal display device provided with a high-molecular dispersion liquid crystal layer 16 in a cell 10 obtained by bonding a pair of transparent substrates 11 and 12 provided with transparent electrodes 13 and 14 through a sealing material 15; oriented films 22 and 23 are arranged on the substrates 11 and 12 and the electrodes 13 and 14, and oriented in different directions. In a state where electric field is not impressed, liquid crystal is twisted in the layer 16, and the scattering performance of incident light by liquid crystal molecules is improved. In a state where the electric field is impressed, the refractive index is nearly equal among the liquid crystal, the oriented films 22 and 23 and the substrates 11 and 12, and the light is hardly scattered. Therefore, the display has high contrast.
