To obtain an ashless dispersant which is useful as a dispersant for an oily compsn. and imparts an excellent sludge protection and an improved viscosity to a lubricating oil by using a reaction product of a Mannich base condensate with a poly(α-olefin/unsatd. acid reactant).
At least one Mnnich base condensate formed from a hydrocarbylhydroxyarom. compd., an aldehyde, and an amine is used. The reaction product of the base with a poly(α-olefin/unsatd. acid reactant) is used after a further reaction with an amine, an alcohol, an aminoalcohol, or a mixture thereof or is used after a further reaction with a posttreatment agent selected from among inorg. or org. phosphorus compds., boron compds., and mono- or polycarboxylic acids and their derivs. 1-99 wt.% dispersant and 99-1 wt.% diluting oil are compounded and used.
