To enlarge a dimmer range while suppressing the change in a color temperature.
This high pressure discharge lamp lighting device is provided with a high pressure discharge lamp 1 having a pair of electrodes, a high pressure lamp starter 2 starting the high pressure discharge lamp 1 by impressing a high voltage pulse voltage thereon, and a ballast stabilizer supplying an AC power for full lighting or dimmer lighting in a lighting position vertical to the high pressure discharge lamp 1. The AC currents to be supplied to the high pressure discharge lamp 1 in both periods when the electrode in the lower side of the high pressure discharge lamp 1 is alternated into a positive electrode and a negative electrode in the dimmer lighting, are made into the relation of large and small ones respectively. The ratio of increasing the temperature of the lower side electrode increases compared with the ratio of lowering its temperature, which increases the whole temperature so as to enlarge the dimmer range while suppressing the change in the color temperature.
