To provide a method for stably preparing optically active alcohols with high optical purity, by establishing and standardizing a method for analyzing the purity of an industrially useful, optically active lactam alcohol derivative.

The optically active lactam alcohol derivative of formula (1) (wherein R1and R2are each a hydrogen atom, a methyl group, an ethyl group, an alkyl group, a methoxy group, an ethoxy group, an alkoxy group, a phenyl group, a substituted phenyl group, a trifluoromethyl group or a halogen atom; and m and n are each an integer of 0-5) having purity of 98% or above determined by an HPLC analysis is prepared and used in an asymmetric reduction.
