Abstract:
To provide a starting method of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell capable of appropriately starting a fuel cell stack by estimating the concentration and amount of liquid fuel in the fuel cell stack without directly measuring them.
The starting method of the polymer electrolyte fuel cell comprises steps for: supplying air as oxidant gas to an air electrode of a fuel cell body 5; measuring the open circuit voltage of a cell in the fuel cell body 5; selecting liquid fuel supplied to the fuel cell body 5 out of a plurality of liquid fuels having different concentrations, based on measured open circuit voltage; and supplying selected liquid fuel to the fuel cell body 5.
