PURPOSE: To obtain a humectant useful for a hair cosmetic, a skin cosmetic, etc., comprising a specific carboxybetaine and to prepare a cosmetic and a cleaning agent composition containing the humectant.
CONSTITUTION: This humectant comprises a carboxybetaine of the formula (A is a 2-20C alkylene; at least one of R1 and R2 is HO-A and the other is a 1-10C alkyl; Y is a 1-10 alkyl which may contain OH). The humectant has an excellent moist feeling in application to hair and skin and maintains the effect for many hours. A cosmetic is mixed with 0.1-30wt.% of carboxybetaine and can be prepared into a dosage form such as liquid, cream, solid, powder, etc. A cleaning agent composition is mixed with 0.5-50wt.% of carboxybetaine and can be prepared into a dosage form such as liquid, paste, solid, powder, etc.
