Abstract:
To provide a humectant having excellent moisture absorbing property and moisture retention property, free from sticky feeling, exhibiting an advantageous effect under a wide pH condition and producible at a low cost.
The humectant comprises a specific β-alanine derivative expressed by formula (1): R1R2N-CH2CH2-COOX (wherein R1 and R2 are each independently hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or hydroxyethyl provided that R1 and R2 are not hydrogen at the same time; and X is a counter of the carboxy group and is an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, basic amino acid or amine).
