PURPOSE: To make shifting either slowly or quickly in accordance with the operating condition by furnishing a judging means to judge the speed of attaining the intended shifting, and changing over the drainage condition of an accumulator and a friction engagement device on the basis of the result from judgement.

CONSTITUTION: A hydraulic control device C of an automatic transmission A includes a shift valve 202, which changes over supply and exhaust of oil pressure to/from two friction engagement devices 200, 201, and an accumulator 205 to be connected via a control valve 204 to an oil path 203 leading from the shift valve 202 to one of the friction engagement devices 200. The arrangement is further equipped with a shift speed judging means 206 to judge the speed of attaining the intended shifting, and when quick shifting is to be made, a shift speed control means 207 controls the shift valve 202 and control valve 204, and draining is made individually from the friction engagement device 200 and accumulator 205, while the two 200, 205 are put in communication to make draining at the time a slow shifting is to be done.
