PURPOSE: To provide a hydraulic elevator having the capability of restraining the vertical behavior of a car at the time of stopping at an elevator hall, without any influence due to the fluctuation of a load in elevator door open state.

CONSTITUTION: A car 1 vertically travels in an elevator shaft 2, guided by the plunger 9 of a hydraulic device 7 along guide rails 3 and 3. The ceiling of the car 1 is fitted with a drive device 18 operating on a car door opening signal. Also, the ceiling 5 and floor 4 of the car 1 are provided with a pair of brake devices 13 and 13 having plungers capable of advancing to and retreating from the sides of the guide rails 3 and 3. In this case, the plungers of the drive devices 13 and 13 advance due to power from the drive device.
