PURPOSE: To obtain a hydrogenated and purified fatty acid having a good hue and stability to heat or chemical reactions, by distillation of a fatty acid hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and a reducing metal.
CONSTITUTION: A fatty acid, e.g. 5W24C fatty acid from animal or vegetable fats and oils, or synthesized, is hydrogenated in the presence of a usual hydrogenation catalyst, e.g. a metal of Group VIII, or VIa in the periodic table, Cu, Le, V, and their alloy, oxide, and hydroxide, or sulfide, and a reducing metal, e.g. Mg, Ca, Al, Zn, Sn or their alloy, and preferably in the presence of a boric acid compound, e.g. ortho-boric acid, and/or a phenol compound preferably having a good heat-resisting property and a boiling point higher than that of raw material fatty acid, and distilled, to obtain a hydrogenated and purified fatty acid having a good hue and stability to heat, oxidation, and acidic or basic reagents.
