Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent clouding or water droplet formation of a base material and to allow self-clarification by providing a layer of a photocatalytic semiconductor material on a surface of the material, and imparting hydrophilicity of specific value to the surface of the layer of the material in response to photo- excitation.
SOLUTION: A base material 10 is covered with a photocatalytic coating 12 as a photocatalytic semiconductor material, and photoexcited with ultraviolet rays. Water is chemisorbed on a surface in the form of hydroxyl group (OH-) by the photocatalytic action, and the surface is made highly hydrophilic of about 5° or less in terms of a contact angle with the water. The photocatalyst used for the coating is most preferably titania. In the case that the material 10 is a transparent material such as glass, lens or mirror, if a thickness of the coating is set to 0.2μm or less, color developing of the coating due to interference of the light is prevented. The thinner the film is, the more the transparency of the material is obtained. Further, wear resistance of the coating is improved.
