Abstract:
An apparatus (10) and method for depositing liquid material onto a workpiece (W) in the form of a deposit (B) having a desired conformation wherein the material is discharged under pressure from the nozzle (29) of a dispensing gun (10) which can be manipulated by a robot to lay the deposit (B) according to a programmed pattern on the workpiece (W). One or more gas jets (34) is directed toward the material (31) after the material is discharged from the nozzle (29) to impart a desired conformation to the material deposited on the workpiece (W). The flow rate of the gas jets (34) is controlled in accordance with the liquid flow rate, and/or a toolspeed signal from the robot to maintain substantial uniformity of the conformation of the deposit (B) and/or in accordance with an auxiliary signal to permit selective alteration of the conformation of the deposit (B). Disruption of a desired conformation due to irregularities in the manner liquid material is pumped to the dispensing gun (10) is avoided by sensing occurrence of the irregularity and adjusting the flow rate of the gas jets (34) in timed relation to the manifestation of the irregularity at the liquid discharge nozzle (29).
