Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply produce a low transmission loss optical fiber having restrained polarization mode dispersion. SOLUTION: An optical fiber preform is formed by melt spinning to obtain a bare wire for an optical fiber and then the bare wire is coated with a resin to form an optical fiber wire 22. Then twists are imparted to the wire 22 by reciprocating the roller in a direction along its rotating shaft 11a to make the wire 22 roll on the groove while moving the wire 22 on the groove of a rotating roller 11 having the V-shaped groove 12 or the U-shaped groove on a roller surface. Swaying motion may be conducted by using the rotating roller 11 having a flat groove on a roller surface and tilting the roller 11 in one direction in such a way that the rotating shaft 11a is at an arbitrary angle to its horizontal direction and then tilting the roller 11 in the opposite direction in such a way that the rotating shaft is at an arbitrary angle to its horizontal direction.
