PURPOSE: To reduce the communication charge by reading an original in the vertical-horizontal direction, compressing the read data, and transmitting one of both compressed data that has the smaller quantity.
CONSTITUTION: An original which is vertically inserted is read by a reading part 1, and the data are compressed by a compressing part 8 and stored in a 1st storage part 2. Then, an original inserted horizontally is read, and the read data are compressed by the part 8 and stored in a 2nd storage part 3. A data quantity detecting part 5 detects the quantities of data stored in both parts 2 and 3. These detected data quantities are compared with each other by a comparing part 7. Then, a control part 6 transmits the data of small quantity and erases the other data of larger quantity.
