PURPOSE: To obtain a magneto-optical recording medium the recording layer of which has a reproduction-only and rewritable areas in such a state that information can be recorded in both areas and the reproduction-only area can be formed arbitrarily and can be formed out of an arbitrary materiaal and a magneto-optical recording and reproducing device using the medium.

CONSTITUTION: In the magneto-optical recording medium which information is recorded on and reproduced from by using such a light beam as laser beam, etc., and which is loaded on the magneto-optical recording and reproducing device, a recording layer 1b is laminated on a substrate 1a and is composed of a reproduction-only and rewritable areas 1c and 1d. The medium has a magnetic shield plate 2 composed of a high-permeability magnetic material having a Curie temperature lower than that of the magnetic material used for the layer 1b and the plate 2 is adhered to the reproduction-only area 1c on the surface of the layer 1b with an adhesive layer 3.
