A compound of the general formula in which -Y-R<2> is SO3<(-)(+)>NR @R<2>, -SO3<(-)(+)>HNR@R<2>, -SO3<(-)(+)>H2NR<3>R<2>, -SO3<(-)(+)>H3NR<2>, -SO2NR<3>R<2> or -SO3R<2>; -X-R<1> is -Y-R<2> or -CONR<3>R<1>, -CO2<(-)(+)>NR @R<1>, -CO2<(-)(+)>HNR @R<1>, -CO2<(-)(+)>H2NR<3>R<1>,-CO2<(-)(+)>H3NR<1>, -R<4>-COOR1, -NR<3>COR<1>, R<4>OR<1>, -R<4>OCOR<1>,-R<4>R<1>, -N(COR<3>)R<1> or Z<(-)(+)>NR @R<1>; -Z<(-)> is SO3<(-)> or -CO2<(-)>; R<1> and R<2> are alkyl, alkoxy alkyl or polyalkoxy alkyl containing at least 10 carbon atoms in the main chain; R<3> is hydrocarbyl and each R<3> may be the same or different and R<4> is nothing or is C1 to C5 alkylene and in the carbon-carbon (C-C) bond is either a) ethylenically unsaturated when A and B may be alkyl, alkenyl or substituted hydrocarbyl groups or b) part of a cyclic structure which may be aromatic, polynuclear aromatic or cyclo-aliphatic.
