Abstract:
A system enables the allocation of Internet domain names for usage in a home, private Internet or other intra-net system independently of the public Internet. The system uses a method for translating a domain name to a corresponding Internet compatible web page address for use in a processing device supporting Internet compatible bi-directional communication at a User site. The method involves examining (310) a message that is destined for a domain name server and that conveys a domain name to be translated to an Internet compatible address. The message is intercepted (315, 317) if the conveyed domain name matches an entry in a predetermined intercepting domain name database. The intercepted domain name is translated (320) to an Internet compatible address using the intercepting domain name database. The domain names may be allocated to support communication to devices local to the processing device without the need for communication of the allocated domain names to a non-local service provider.
