Abstract:
Difluorinated terphenyls of formula I are described, together with their use in nematic and ferroelectric smectic C liquid crystal materials. wherein R1 and R2 are independently alkoxy, alkyl, perfluoroalkoxy or perfluoroalkyl; any one of the following pairs of lateral substituents both being fluorine: (A, B), (C, D), (D, E), (C, E), (B, G), (D, J), (D, K), (A, G), (C, J) all of the other lateral substitution positions being occupied by hydrogen, but excluding the terphenyl in which (C, D) are both fluorine, R1 is ethoxy and R2 is n-pentyl.
