PURPOSE: To automatically detect the kind of a cloth by binary-coding the output of an identification code mark detector when a timing mark is detected, restoring the identification code and identifying the cloth from the output.
CONSTITUTION: The timing marks 1 having a fluorescence correspondingly to the respective digits of the identification code represented by a binary are previously arranged in a row at the start end of the moving direction A of the cloth 3 and formed. On the digit having '1', the identification code mark 2 of the fluorescence is formed previously at a position corresponding to the mark 1 and the cloth 3 is moved with respect to the detectors 4, 5 so as to cross the timing mark detector 4 and the identification mark detector 5 on the marks 1 and 2. As a result, the output of the detector 5 when the detector 4 respectively detects the marks 1 of the respective digits is respectively binary coded, the identification code is restored and the cloth is identified from the output thereof.
