The light output of a high-intensity discharge lamp is changed over to at least 2 stages by a sensor before use to light the high-intensity discharge lamp by changing over the light output thereof to the lower stage when neither person nor thing is present in a prescribed illumination area or light it by changing over the light output of the lamp to the higher stage when a person or thing is detected by the sensor.
