Abstract:
To provide a illuminator and an image display device that can suppress dazzling of projected light with simple constitution and can exhibit improved reliability.
The illuminator is provided with: a light source 11 which emits monochromatic light; a polarized light rotating element 12 which temporally changes the plane of polarization of the light emitted by the light source; an optical path separating element 13 which separates the optical path of the projection light projected from the polarized light rotating element 12; and a light guide means 14 of making light beams separated by the optical path separating element 13 incident on a projection object member.
