PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the compression efficiency of a pseudo medium tone image by monitoring frequency of coincidence between each symbol in a plurality of conversion processing incidence probability tables and each actual coded picture element and using a table whose coincidence takes place with high frequency for coding.
SOLUTION: Received image data picture element is stored in a reception image data storage section 1 and given to a coding section 4. The coding is conducted by using a conversion processing incidence appearance probability table 6-1 of a conversion processing incidence probability table group 6 from an incidence probability table control section 3b. In this case, an optimum table identification section 3a monitors the frequency of coincidence between a symbol with a high incidence probability and an actual coded picture element. When the frequency of occurrence exceeds a prescribed level, it is discriminated that the table 6-1 is suitable for a table based on conversion processing into a pseudo medium image and the compression processing is continued. When the frequency of occurrence is less than the prescribed level, a succeeding table 6-2 is used and the processing above is repeated. When all the provided tables are not applicable to the compression processing, an initial value incidence probability table 5 is applied to the coding. Thus, the compression efficiency of the pseudo medium tone image is improved.
