To improve the contrast feeling while giving priority to the contents preferred and viewed by a user out of images including a synthetic image.
The image display apparatus for displaying the synthetic image produced by synthesizing a plurality of input images includes a feature detection unit for sensing feature values of each input image, a video signal processing unit at least for a correction process of the contrast of each input image based on each feature value sensed by the feature detection unit, a synthesis unit for producing a synthetic image by synthesizing the images after the contrast correction by the image signal processing unit, a screen for displaying the synthetic image produced by the synthesis unit, a backlight for providing a light of a predetermined brightness to the screen, and a backlight control unit for determining the brightness of the backlight based on each feature value sensed by the feature detection unit and the display area of each image synthesized in the synthesis unit. The backlight provides a light of the brightness determined by the backlight control unit.
