To provide an image display device and image display method which prevent lost highlight details without changing the impression of a display image as a whole.
In the image display device, the display image is regulated by a dimmer function processing of illumination light and an expansion processing of the number of gradations of an image signal. The image display device is equipped with an image parameter extracting means 82 for extracting the image parameter characterizing the brightness of the display image from the image signal by each of unit time, a dimmer function control means 83 for having the dimmer function processing executed based on the image parameter extracted by the image parameter extracting means 82, and an expansion processing means 86 for performing the expansion processing based on the image parameter extracted by the image parameter extracting means 82. The expansion processing means 86 performs the expansion processing by determining an expansion control parameter in such a manner that the maximum gradation of the inputted image signal attains the gradation lower than the maximum gradation that can be outputted.
