To provide an image forming apparatus provided with a fixing device which uses an external heat roller to make a surface temperature of a pressure roller uniform and allows the most suitable fixing temperature for paper quality to be set by automatically detecting the paper quality of a recording paper to be fixed.
The fixing device includes a heat roller having a heating means, the pressure roller for pressing the heat roller, the external heat roller brought into contact with the pressure roller, a detection means for detecting the paper quality of the recording paper to be fixed, and a control means which performs control so as to automatically set the surface temperature of the external heat roller to a first or second temperature in accordance with a detection result of the detection means.
