The image forming apparatus includes: a conveying means which has both a detection lever 132 to operate when a rear end of the recording medium 108 passes; and a sensor 131 to detect the detection lever 132 and which conveys the recording medium 108 in a predetermined direction, and an estimating means which estimates a movement amount of the recording medium 108 for a time after the rear end of the recording medium 108 passes the detection lever 132 before it is detected by the sensor 131 on the basis of at least a speed profile formed from a velocity and an acceleration of the recording medium 108 by driving of the conveying means. The image forming apparatus is equipped with a speed profile updating means which estimates a movement estimate time ΔT of the recording medium 108 from a position X2 at an arbitrary first time point to a position X1 at an arbitrary second time point on the basis of the speed profile and updates the speed profile on the basis of the comparison result between the movement estimate time ΔT and an actual movement time Tr from the first time point to the second time point.
