To provide an image forming apparatus capable of removing a deteriorated layer of the surface of an image carrier without scratching the image carrier.
An image forming apparatus comprises: a rotatable photoreceptor drum 1413; and an application brush roller 182 rotating in a counter direction with respect to the rotating direction of the photoreceptor drum 1413 while sliding a bristle portion 182B against the image carrier surface of the photoreceptor drum 1413. The bristle portion is inclined forward in the forward rotating direction of the application brush roller 182. Specifically, the bristles of the bristle portion 182B are curved in the shape of arc from their roots to their tips such that the bristles are inclined forward in the forward rotating direction of the application brush roller 182. Accordingly, by using the application brush roller 182 with the bristle portion 182B whose rigidity is made different according to its rotating direction without improving the rigidity of each bristle of the bristle portion 182B, the abrasion force of the application brush roller 182 against the surface of the photoreceptor drum 1413 can be sufficiently obtained.
