To provide an image forming apparatus that can reduce a user's inconvenience in setting the state of the image forming apparatus when being recognized by an external device.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus 1 is connected to an external device 100 through a communication cable Ca. The image forming apparatus 1 comprises a connection unit 50, a detection unit 13, a first counting unit 14, and a determination unit. The communication cable Ca is connected to the connection unit 50. The detection unit 13 detects that the connection unit 50 and the external device 100 are connected by the communication cable Ca. The first counting unit 14 counts the number of times the connection of the external device 100 with the connection unit 50 is detected by the detection unit 13. The determination unit 16 determines whether to cause the external device 100 to recognize the image forming apparatus 1 as a storage device or to cause the external device 100 to recognize the image forming apparatus 1 as a printer device, based on the number of times the connection of the external device 100 with the connection unit 50 is detected.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
