PURPOSE: To improve the operability of editing by generating optimum editing images for the editing by editing modes wherein a generated image is edited.

CONSTITUTION: A portrait generating device 1 consists of a ROM2 storing a program and data for the generating process of a portrait, a CPU3 which edits portrait screen data according to the program stored in the ROM2, a work RAM4 storing data handled when the CPU3 performs the processing, a VDP(video display processor)5 which generates an editing screen for editing the portrait screen data under the control of the CPU3, a VRAM(video random access memory)6 storing the image data generated by the VDP5, an NTSC encoder 7 which converts the screen data stored in the VRAM6 into an ordinary video signal, e.g. an NTSC signal, and a controller 8 which gives processing contents to the CPU3.
