To correct deterioration of sensitivity and fluctuation of hue due to shading or a reduced peripheral light by controlling the gain for every color component in an image signal in accordance with lens information and a distance from the center of an image pickup surface.
The image signal generated by a CCD imaging device 11 is digitized by an A/D converting part 14 and supplied to a gain control part 15 and, then, gain is controlled for ever color component. The gain control part 15 fetches the image signal in accordance with the positions of the respective pixels of the device 11. Then the gain control part 15 calculates the cumulative value of the distance L from the center of the image pickup surface at every image signal corresponding to each pixel and calculates the controlled variable of gain through the use of the cumulative value and the value of a coefficient which is supplied from a coefficient calculating part 23. Besides, the control part 15 controls the gain for every color component of the image signal by the calculated gain controlled variable. That is, the gain is controlled for every color component of each image signal in accordance with the lens information and the distance from the center of the image pickup surface.
