PURPOSE: To enable high-speed, high-precision AF and to take a picture in an optimum exposure state by adjusting the exposure state according to the kind of a focus decision means and the brightness of a subject image.
CONSTITUTION: The focus decision means 5 is an autocorrelation device and the image formation state of the subject is decided by an AF system utilizing autocorrelation. An image formation state of the subject image is decided by AF system with a defocusing detection device 6. Then when the image formation state of the subject image is decided, the focus decision means by autocorrelation is driven and then a focus decision means by defocusing detection is driven. At this time, information on the exposure state of an exposure quantity adjusting means by the focus decision means by autocorrelation which is being driven is utilized to determine a next initial value of the exposure state of the exposure quantity adjusting means by the focus decision means by defocusing detection.
