To provide an image pickup device that can easily and efficiently designate the compression rate of a specific area in a picked-up image on purpose and easily manage the processed image and to provide its control method and a computer-readable memory.

A zoom lever 25 performs a zooming operation for magnification/reduction by a zoom function. A monitor 18 displays a picked-up image to designate a desired partial area in the picked-up image by an area designation lever 34. A compression circuit 23 compresses the designated area and the non-designated area at different compression rates. Then an area detector 33 controls the designated area on the basis of the zooming operation.
