To provide an image processing apparatus which can store image data obtained by optically reading an original by using little memory resources and can reduce the degradation of image quality when the stored image data are used by an external instrument.
An image signal generated by reading the original by a scanner 11 is provided to a first filter processing part 13 through a LOG conversion part 12. In the first filter processing part 13, a process for reducing image degradation caused by the reading of the scanner is performed and then the image signal is compressed by a lossy compression part 16 and stored in a memory 17. The image signal read from the memory 17 is expanded and a filter process for reducing the image degradation caused by the compression is performed by a second filter processing part 20.
