Motion picture data are recorded on a medium in e.g., a digital camera and a plurality of still pictures selected in response to a still picture capturing request or the like from a user are recorded on the medium as an index image corresponding to motion picture data. Furthermore, information on the plurality of still pictures is recorded as associated still picture information in management information corresponding to motion pictures. In the reproduction processing of the index image, the index image (each still picture) is read from the medium in accordance with the associated still picture information in the management information and slide show display is performed for displaying the plurality of read still pictures sequentially on a display. Such a configuration enables a user to easily grasp contents of motion pictures without fail.
