To compute an optimum output signal by performing compression within a color area of output equipment when the spectrum reflectivity of an input is not within the color area of the output equipment.
An image output device inputs spectral reflectivity data acquired by input equipment capable of acquiring the spectral reflectivity data as an input signal, and converts them into an output signal of the output equipment. The output device has a means which has a Look-Up-Table of the input signal and an output signal, and converts the input signal into the output signal; a means for deciding whether or not the input signal is outside the color reproduction range of the output equipment; and a means for switching the Look-Up-Table to a table having a smaller number of dimensions to perform compression within the color reproduction range, when the input signal is outside the color reproduction range of the output equipment.
