There is provided an image projection device which comprises: a polarization separating element 9a having a polarized light separating surface 9a1 which transmits first polarized light and reflects second polarized light; and a projection optical system 20 for projecting light from an optical modulator 11g. A first phase difference plate 12g and a second phase difference plate 13g are arranged between the polarization separating element and the optical modulator from the side of the polarization separating element in this order. The optical axis of the second phase difference plate is parallel to the xy-surface. The device has a turning mechanism 30 which turns at least one of the first and second phase difference plates around the rotation center axis extending in the y-direction.
