To provide a technology capable of controlling the drive of a carriage with high accuracy, on which a read sensor is placed, without using any encoder or cord wheel, while adopting a driving system using a DC motor.
The image reading apparatus is provided with a read sensor for reading a document and generating an image signal; a carriage for placing the read sensor thereon; a DC motor for driving the carriage in a driving direction; a pattern formed along the driving direction, outside the read range of the document and within a range, that can be read by the read sensor, for generating position information, corresponding to a position of the read sensor when the pattern is read by the read sensor; and a control means for controlling the DC motor so as to drive the read sensor to a predetermined position, on the basis of the position information generated by reading the pattern using the read sensor.
