PURPOSE: To prevent a decrease in image quality due to deterioration in tonality due to a connection of dots by forming dots by exposing a photosensitive body by using a slanting elliptic beam as the scanning beam generated by a laser scanning optical system.
CONSTITUTION: The photosensitive body which is small in potential drop in the beginning of exposure and large in the intermediate period is exposed by using the slanting elliptic beam. For the purpose, a semiconductor laser 11 is installed slantingly and a scanning mirror 17 is installed at such an angle that the beam spot is incident slantingly on the peripheral surface of the photosensitive drum 30. The beam spot, therefore, becomes elliptic slanting at right angles to the scanning direction and an electrostatic lantent image in a chain dot shape is formed on the photosensitive drum 30 and developed by a developing unit to become a visible toner image dot.
