Image data to be registered are inputted, and an appurtenant information to be given to the inputted image data is inputted. The significance classification information for the appurtenant information is obtained to judge whether a keyword included in the appurtenant information has polysemy or not from the significance classification information. As a result of the judgement, if the keyword has polysemy, the image data are retrieved based on the significance classification information and the appurtenant information. Classification name of the image data are set based on the results of retrieval. The appurtenant information is displayed on a predetermined screen and is controlled based on the set classification name.
