To provide an image sensing device which is capable of forming an image of high quality without being affected by a performance deterioration in the peripheral edge of a lens in zoom operation.
The image sensing device is equipped with an optical zooming function which enlarges or reduces an image formed on an image sensing device (CCD) by moving an optical system and an electronic zooming function which enlarges or reduces an image formed by the image sensing device electronically. In an image sensing mode (a pixel number conversion mode) in which the picked up images are recorded in pixels smaller in number than those of the image sensing device, when the whole zooming magnification is smaller than a prescribed value, an optical zooming function is stopped, and the image sensing device is controlled so as to activate only its electronic zooming function.
