The imaging apparatus comprises: imaging control means 10 for controlling the exposure and reading of an imager 102 in response to a timing signal for each predetermined period; imaging lens drive means for driving an imaging lens 101; auxiliary light emitting means 30; and a noise level detection circuit 106 for detecting the signal level of the predetermined frequency band of a read image signal. In a case where a first noise signal level calculated based on a signal detected by the noise level detection circuit 106, from an image signal for one image plane read in a first imaging control mode, is higher than a first predetermined value, switching to a second imaging control mode is carried out. In a case where a second noise signal level calculated based on a signal detected by the noise level detection circuit 106, from an image signal for one image plane read in a second imaging control mode, is lower than a second predetermined value, switching to the first imaging control mode is carried out.
