An imaging apparatus includes: an imaging element for capturing the image of a subject and outputting an imaging signal; display means for sequentially displaying images based on imaging signals to be output from the imaging element at a predetermined cycle; luminance information detection means for detecting luminance information of a subject; calculation means for calculating a shutter speed in capturing an image to be displayed in the display means on the basis of the diaphragm value of an aperture diaphragm for adjusting the amount of light to be made incident to the imaging element and luminance information detected by the luminance information detection means; and cycle switching means for comparing a shutter speed calculated by the calculation means with a predetermined determination threshold and switching a cycle between a first cycle and a second cycle longer than the first cycle. The cycle switching means uses different determination thresholds between the increase case and the decrease case of a shutter speed calculated by the calculation means.
