To enable detection of a person's face from a photographed image with accuracy, when the person is photographed in a situation of insufficient brightness, for example, against a background of a night scene.
A light control region of a stroboscope is set in a photographing image including a subject, according to a distance measured by a distance measurement controller 42 for measuring the distance to the subject. Based on the photographed image produced under a pre-light emission, a face area in the photographed image is detected. According to the above detected face area, the light control region is determined. According to a photometric value in the above determined light control region being obtained under the pre-light emission, a main light-emission amount is calculated. Based on the calculated main light-emission amount, the stroboscope is controlled, and photographing is performed accordingly.
