To provide an imaging apparatus and method for easily recognizing which zoom operation of a second zoom control mode such as a step zoom and a first zoom control mode such as a normal zoom is effective.
The imaging apparatus has a first zoom control mode which disposes zoom stopping enabled positions between a wide angle end and a telephoto end in a first pattern and changes the positions by a first operation member and a second zoom control mode which disposes zoom stopping enabled positions in a second pattern whose number of zoom stopping positions is smaller than that of the first pattern and changes the positions by a second operation member. In the second zoom control mode, prescribed information that is not informed in the first zoom control mode is informed so as to be recognized that the mode is not the first zoom control mode but the second zoom control mode by an informing means.
