Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain variation of the amount of absorption of impact energy.
SOLUTION: In this impact absorbing steering device 1, an outer jacket 10 of a steering column 4 and an inner jacket 11 are engaged so as to relatively slide. Swelling projections 42-44 are formed at an outer periphery 41 of the inner jacket 11 as a plurality of outward projections 29. A plurality of inward projections 28 are formed at an inner periphery 31 of the outer jacket 10 by caulking. The inward projections 28 and the outward projections 29 are engaged and both the jackets 10, 11 are kept in a press fit condition. Both the jackets 10, 11 are relatively slid at the time of collision, and engagement between projections is released at a roughly simultaneous timing to release the press fit condition. The amount of absorption of the impact energy by press fit of the jackets can be reduced, thus reducing the variation in the amount of absorption.
