Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in a high degree of purity and a good yield from a 5,6-dicarboxy-3-pyridylmethyl ammonium halide precursor via a single step reaction.
SOLUTION: This compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula I [Z is H or a halogen; Z1 is H, a halogen, cyano or the like; Y and Y1 are each H, ONa, OK or the like; X is Cl, Br, I or R1SO3 (R1 is a 1-4C alkyl or the like); Q is expressed by formula II (R2 to R4 are each a 1-8C alkyl, or the like), or the like] with an alcohol expressed by the formula: ROH (R is a 1-4C alkyl or phenyl) and a base (e.g. sodium methoxide) in a closed and pressurized system at 120-180°C to form a compound of formula III (M is an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal). The compound of formula III is useful as an intermediate for synthesizing imidazolinone herbicidal agents.
