PURPOSE: To provide a dispersion which gives a coating compsn. excellent in stability, filtrability, gloss, viscosity, drying time, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A nonaq. dispersion. in an alkyd medium, of an addition polymer having a Z-average mol.wt. higher than about 150,000 and an NVM of about 70% or lower is prepd. by the free-radical addition polymn. of at least two monomers in the presence of the alkyd medium and a chain transfer agent. At least one monomer copolymerized in the above-mentioned process is selected from among acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, hydroxyethyl acrylate, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, methyl itaconate, methyl maleate, methyl fumarate, and mixtures of these monomers provided at least one monomer copolymerized has a hydroxyl-functional group.
