To provide an improved ranging camera which obtains information concerning depth substantially simultaneously from all pixels in one scene.
Apparatus for creating an image indicating distances to objects in a scene includes: a modulated source of radiation having a first modulation function which directs radiation toward the scene; a detector that includes a detection modulator, has a second modulation function, has a detection array including a plurality of detection elements, detects radiation reflected from a plurality of segments having a parallel interval in the scene, and generates signals responsive to the distance to regions of the scene responsive to the detected radiation; a processor for forming an image that includes at least some of the plurality of segments having the interval and has an intensity distribution indicative of the distance of objects from the apparatus. Each of the plurality of segments having intervals has distance limitation related to the apparatus, the distance limitation is determined by the detection modulator, and at least one of the plurality of segments having intervals has distance limitation different from the limitation of at least another segment having the interval.
