Abstract:

To provide an improved process for preparing 3,4-diyhdroxybutanoic acid applicable to prepare 3,4-dihydroxybutanoic acid-γ-lactone and 2(5H) furanone, particularly, stereoisomers thereof, which are useful as chemical intermediates to naturally occurring fatty acids.

The improved process for converting the D- or L-hexose source to 3,4-diyhdroxybutanoic acid by using an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide and a peroxide oxidizing agent is provided. The process comprises maintaining the base and the oxidizing agent <0.02 M in the reaction mixture at any time and maintaining a temperature at about 25-80°C. Upon acidification of the reaction mixture, the 3-hydroxylactone is produced.
