Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful e.g. for the treatment of cardiac disease and lipid metabolism diseases from waste materials by acylating a precursor of D-(+)-carnitine or the like, lactonizing after acid hydrolysis, treating with a base and subjecting the product to chromatographic treatment.
CONSTITUTION: A precursor of D-(+)-carnitine nitrile of the formula I (X- is an arbitrary counter ion), D-(+)-carnitinamide of the formula II or the like having a configuration reverse to L-(-)-carnitine is converted to acylated compounds expressed by the formula III (R is a 1-12C alkylsulfonyl, formyl or trifluoroacetyl) and the formula IV. The acylated compound is hydrolyzed with an acid, the produced acyl (D)-(+)-carnitine is converted into L-(-)- carnitine lactone of the formula V by the treatment under basic condition, the product is treated in a basic solution to obtain L-(-)-carnitine and the solution is subjected to chromatography on a resin to obtain L-(-)-carnitine in high efficiency from the waste having reverse steric configuration.
